Version 1.0 launch!

I’m thrilled to announce that Smart Media Cutter has reached version 1.0! This is a significant milestone for me and the project, and this release is full of highly requested features and improvements! Thank you to everyone who gave feedback and feature requests. And big thanks to litz on Discord, for both testing and UI suggestions.

From multilingual support to new editing tools, there’s something in this update for everyone. Let’s dive into the details!

UI Translations for 10 Languages

SMC should be easy to use and accessible to everyone. That’s why I’ve added UI translations for 10 languages:

  • German
  • English
  • Spanish
  • Finnish
  • French
  • Japanese
  • Portuguese
  • Swedish
  • Ukrainian
  • Chinese
Japanese
Finnish

You can now switch to your preferred language from the top menu bar, making the interface more intuitive and user-friendly for our global community.

Big reason I wanted to add languages was that my dad expressed interest in trying out the software, but he only knows Finnish. So even though translations are a lot of work, personal reasons and global reach together make them worth while to add 🙂

Light and Dark Themes

We understand that the visual comfort of an editing environment is crucial for productivity. With version 1.0, we’ve added light and dark themes. Whether you’re editing in a well-lit studio or burning the midnight oil, you can now choose a theme that suits your environment and reduces eye strain.

Cutting of Subtitle Tracks

Subtitles are an essential part of many videos, especially in multilingual contexts. SMC now supports cutting of subtitle tracks alongside your video edits. This means you can maintain subtitle synchronization while cutting some TV-shows and whatnot.

Support for Cutting MPEG-2 Video

We’ve expanded our supported formats to include MPEG-2 video. This is particularly useful for those working with older footage or broadcast content. You can now import, edit, and export MPEG-2 videos without any hassle, giving you more flexibility with your projects.

Tool to Find and Cut Black Frames

I added a new tool that automatically finds and cuts black frames from your video. This feature can be used to find ad breaks or transitions. Later I might expand it to a more featured ad detection tool with more features, but this is a start.

Timeline Export to Shotcut (.mlt)

In addition to our existing support for exporting timelines to professional video editing software like Resolve and Premiere, we’ve added the ability to export your timelines to Shotcut using the .mlt format. Shotcut users can now seamlessly continue their editing without losing any work, making SMC an even more versatile tool in your video production pipeline.

Other Improvements and Updates

  • Performance Enhancements: We’ve optimized the app to run more smoothly, especially when working with large files.
  • Bug Fixes: Addressed several minor bugs reported by the community to improve overall stability.
  • UI Tweaks: Made minor adjustments to the interface to enhance usability and aesthetics. Some highlights are the scrollbar under timeline, navigation tool menu, transcript loading bar, and small changes to the hotkeys.

Looking Ahead

Reaching version 1.0 is just the beginning. I’m committed to continually improving Smart Media Cutter based on your feedback. As always, we encourage you to share your thoughts, suggestions, and experiences with us and the best place to do that is on the SMC Discord server.

I’m also excited to keep growing the SMC YouTube channel, with more tutorials, tips, and more high effort content with good stories and anything I want to talk about.
