New in Version 0.9: Timeline Export to Resolve and Premiere!

Version 0.9 is here, and it comes with some great new features that should make editing process smoother for experienced video editors. This release brings timeline export support for Resolve and Premiere, a new silence cutting tool, and some minor UI improvements. Let’s dive into the details!

Timeline Export to Resolve and Premiere

Smart Media Cutter aims to be the best linear video editor there is. But most people who do serious video editing are going to need to use NLEs in the process. So direct export to professional video editing software is a must-have feature. And I’m thrilled announce that SMC now supports exporting cut timelines to Resolve and Premiere.

For Resolve, I tried some options and the one that worked best was OpenTimelineIO Format (.otio). I believe this implementation is quite robust and it supports any number of audio tracks either from multi-track containers or separate audio files. On the Premiere side, you can now export timelines in .xml format. Right now, it only exports the first audio timeline, but I’m considering expanding this in future updates. I’ll also look to add more editor targets as well. Final Cut Pro should be next on the list, although FCP should be able to load the .xml files as well. As always, let me know if this is something you’d like to see sooner rather than later!

New Silence Cutting Tool

Another addition in this release is the silence cutting tool, which is a perfect partner to our existing speechless segment cutting tool. While the speechless tool tends to be more user-friendly and robust (it doesn’t require fine-tuning of dB thresholds and is generally better at handling things like trailing ‘s’ sounds), the silence cutting tool might be just what you need for non-speech content or for more specific cases in speech editing. I’d love to hear how you’re using it and any suggestions you might have for making it even better.

UI Improvements and Other Updates

This release also brings some helpful UI improvements. I’ve added new hotkeys to make searching easier—just hit Ctrl+F to focus on the search bar, and you can now use Enter to jump to the next result, even if your focus isn’t on the search bar.

Other small UI improvements:

  • You can now grab and drag the playhead to seek.
  • There’s a new button to cancel video exports halfway through, which should save you time if you catch something you need to adjust during export.
  • Speechless segment cutting & Silence cutting can now be ran even before the audio is loaded. The tools will just wait until everything is ready.
  • I did some visual cleanups with the icons and timeline. I think it’s 5% prettier now.

I also took some time to move a few buttons around and clean up the UI a bit. The timeline now displays a pretty translucent red over sections that have been cut, so it’s easier to see exactly where your edits are taking place.

Looking Ahead

As always, the feedback from the community is invaluable in shaping the direction of Smart Media Cutter. I’m still looking for more content creators who want to hop on a a Discord call with me. Feedback has been really positive and it’s been awesome to see how you’re using all the features!

My plans to grow the SMC YouTube channel.
