Version 0.8 doesn’t have big headline features, but I think this still was an important release to push out quickly. Mostly for two reasons; firstly the vertical video template UI introduced in 0.7 was rather too difficult to use and I don’t want to scare away anybody who just wants to output some TikToks/Shorts and secondly because the RAM usage was off the charts when editing long videos, like 5+ hr streams, which basically meant that 32 or 64 GB of ram was a necessity.
With 0.8 you both have an easier UI and can actually open videos without running out of memory, which is always a big plus when trying to use software.
As always, you can get the new version from the downloads page.
Vertical video updates
First of all, the vertical video template UI now has handles that let you modify the input rectangles and the output position with intuitive dragging interface.
Honestly, this should have been included already in 0.7 but better late than never. This addition should make it much faster and nicer to setup your templates for different games and stream setups, etc.
In addition there is a new option to add a watermark of your choosing to the output.
Watermarks are just images that are overlayed onto the output video. Technically the watermark can also be a video but I haven’t tested how that actually works.
As an example of how the watermarks could be useful, we can look at the Twitch clipping tool and how it places the channel name with the logo onto the vertical video:
Of course, since with Smart Media Cutter you provide your own image to overlay, you can control the styling and add different socials, channel logo, etc.
Segment export mode
Another addition is the ability to output each segment as a separate video. This should make it easier and faster to export bunch of short videos.
And other improvements
Like I mentioned in the intro, one of the big changes is that the new version uses a lot less RAM when opening long videos. When new video file is opened, we go through the video metadata and gather some helpful information on frame timings and video features that help with seeking and setting the cut points on frame boundaries, etc. Previously that process was accidentally storing a lot of extra stuff that caused way too much memory consumption. That issue is now fixed, but I’ll keep looking for any opportunities to improve memory usage and processing speed of the app.
Other small improvements include the addition of option to change the video codec when recoding the whole video:
There are also other smaller UI fixes and some stability improvements. I noticed and fixed some cases where the preview player doesn’t work at all.
All in all it’s a pretty solid upgrade from the previous version, so make sure to download and install the newest version of the app!
