Vertical video platforms like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube shorts are important for content marketing. Previously I was not planning on adding support for vertical video exports anytime soon, because it doesn’t synergize with the smart cutting without recoding tech, which I think is one the strong suits of this program.
However, after implementing the automatic highlights from Twitch chat feature in last release, it became clear to me that the ability to export vertical videos directly from Smart Media Cutter could be a killer feature!
This feature was also requested by couple of the streamers we were in contact with for feedback. If you’d like to suggest features, any issues your having, show your workflow or just chat about content creation contact me on Discord and let’s have a call!

Transform video to vertical format using the layout editor.
Here you see the new vertical video transform dialog, used for editing the where the relevant content is located in the input stream and where it should be placed in the output. Some sort of editor like this is necessary since every stream or other input video has their own setup.
I was again trying the the editor with this stream from WagamamaTV, because the highlights from Twitch chat feature works really nicely with this type of stream. After making the layout to stack the webcam and the gameplay on top of each other, each of the found highlights could be made into a short pretty much without further editing!
When you create a new view, there is a list of presets to select from. These are there to help you get started with editor. You can later change the view with form editor and the your changes will be visible in the visualization.
You can also have any number of disabled views, e.g. for your standard webcam positions with different games. You can use the editor to name them with names that help you remember later which views are used for each type of content. Disabled views have gray color in the list.
Future plans
I wrote in the last release post that I’d take a couple week break from releasing new versions to jumpstart YouTube presence for SMC. That will still happen, but it was delayed a little by this release. It just felt to me like now was the right time to implement vertical video.
Again, if you have any requests, the Discord server for Smart Media Cutter has started to grow nicely and you can contact me for anything there. Also tell me if you end up trying the vertical video export or any other fancy feature we have in the editor 🙂
After all the changes in the last couple releases, the feature roadmap looks like there is still room for new high priority features. I’ll see how thing look in couple weeks as more feedback comes in. Probably there will again be some new urgent stuff to fix, but such is development.
